Ethiopia’s Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia has won the men's title in his debut at this distance.
Edna Kiplagat of Kenya won the women's race which is her first major marathon championship.
The world famous, Haile Gebrselassie (another Ethopian) pulled out at the 16-mile mark with an apparent right knee injury.
Shalane Flanagan of the United States was second in the women's race in her marathon debut. The 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in the 10,000 meters became the first American woman to finish in the top two since 1990.
An invited guest to run the marathon was Edison Pena – Pena, who was nicknamed "The Runner" for logging up to six miles a day while trapped underground in a Chilean mine, has high hopes for finishing. "What I thought about as I ran in the mine was that I was going to beat destiny," Pena said through a translator at a packed news conference Thursday, hours after flying into New York. "I was going to turn the tables on destiny. I was saying to that mine, 'I can outrun you. I'm going to run until you're just tired and bored of me.'
"And I did it."
